  • Welcome to Jefferson County Indiana!

We want everyone to know why the Madison, Indiana area is a great place to live, work, play, and stay. It’s true, you can’t change time. But if you spend it right, it can change you. So, if you want to make the most of your time, come to a place that respects its past but looks to its future. Jefferson Country has never been like anywhere else, and we’re proud of it. To us, history isn’t about endings, it’s where stories begin. We know one good story always leads to another.

In 2015, Madison, Indiana was named to the Indiana Statewide Cultural Districts Program by the Indiana Arts Commission. In 2017, we were named in the top 8 of America's Best Communities! And Madison recently accepted the title of Indiana's Music City because of its vibrant music scene. All of these designations were built from teamwork, unity, and pride in our community.

Madison, Indiana is a remarkable small city in the heart of Jefferson County. Founded in 1809, our gorgeous, architecturally-renowned buildings stand in complimentary contrast to the natural beauty of the Ohio River valley. In this booming Indiana river city, Madison residents quickly built what is now the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark District in the United States.

Hanover, Indiana is located in the southern part of Jefferson County with 3200 people living there. It is home to Hanover College. founded in 1827 it is Indiana's oldest private college. The Princeton Review calls it one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. From its Point, you can watch the Ohio River flowing by down in the valley.

Visually, Madison is a step back in time, but geographically, we are a short drive from three major cities: Louisville, KY, Cincinnati, OH, and Indianapolis, IN. Balancing our forward-thinking goals for development with historic charm, we value our unique history and work to preserve the characteristics that set us apart.
