Decisions Made Regarding Officer Jonathan Simpson and Former Chief Jeremey Perkins
Madison, IN – The Madison Police Department Merit Board made decisions during this evening’s board meeting to terminate Officer Jonathan Simpson and to appoint former Chief Jeremey Perkins to sergeant.
It is the responsibility of the Merit Board to review various personnel actions associated with the city police department. This includes hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
“We as a community never want to see an officer fired; however, this disciplinary action was determined to be necessary by the Chief of Police,” said City Attorney Joe Jenner. “The city expects all employees to follow department policies and procedures. We appreciate the time and attention given to this mater by the Merit Board.”
This administration is committed to strengthening community safety and will continue to serve the residents of Madison in a manner that is reflective of our standards. The Merit Board’s decision tonight is reflective of that commitment.
In regards to former Chief Perkins, the decision was made to appoint Perkins to sergeant after reviewing current state statutes. Per statute, after removal from an upper level policymaking position the member shall be appointed to the rank in the department that the member held prior to the member’s appointment to the upper level position. The City of Madison appreciates the services provided by Perkins as chief and his commitment to serve the Madison Police Department.
