Madison, Indiana – May 14, 2019 – On behalf of the City of Madison, Indiana, Visit Madison, Inc., The Jefferson County Veterans Council, Jefferson County Veterans Service Office, and Madison Main Street, we are happy to announce that the 2019 Jefferson County Veteran Banners are now hanging for the season in anticipation of Armed Forces Day, this Saturday, May 182019.

The U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard banners, along with the 56 local veteran banners are again displayed along Madison’s beautiful riverfront and along Broadway and Jefferson streets. A map with the veteran banner locations will be available at the Visitor Center 601 W. First Street. A listing of each of the 61 banners is available upon request. The ending of the banner season will be shortly after Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2019.

The Jefferson County Veteran Banner Project committee encourages those on Facebook to look out for bios posted on each of the 2019 Veterans with banners. Like the page @JeffersonCountyVeteransBannerProject (https://www.facebook.com/JeffersonCountyVeteransBannerProject/ )

A special thanks to Spencer Perkins, City of Madison Street Department, Robin Henderson, Happy Smith and Larry Jones for hanging the banners for this season. All local businesses and homeowners are always encouraged to display their own American Flags to honor our veterans.

Last year on Armed Forces Day, organizers held a very special ceremony at Bicentennial Park, celebrating the inaugural year of the veteran banner project. The ceremony also honored each military branch, all the veterans and active duty in Jefferson County. Over 250 people attended, watched, listened, learned and paid tribute to our men and women of service. Honorary guest speakers included Madison Mayor Damon Welch, Jefferson County Commissioner David Bramer; and Robert Woodfill, nephew of Major Samuel Woodfill the only Hoosier solider to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War I for his service to our country.
