Please plan to attend the inaugural Mid-Southern Small Farm Ag Summit on April 12th and 13th, 2019. The Summit will be a two-day event located at Southern Hills Church on Highway 135 just south of Salem. The purpose of the event is to promote agriculture, small farm operations and family farms across southern Indiana. The summit will begin on Friday afternoon with a break-out session including topics such as Incorporating Bees on Your Farm, Rotational Grazing on Small Acreage, Getting Started with High Tunnels, Popcorn-a Regional Opportunity, Food Safety, and Ag. Advocacy – How Do I Get Started? Following this, the group will travel to Cornucopia Farm LLC for a tour of the operation, a farm-to-fork dinner and a discussion of the Baird Family Farm. Saturday will begin with a key note speaker on ‘Why Do I Need to be an Ag. Advocate?’, with a second key note speaker at lunch discussing ‘Ag. Policy Update and Outlook Impacting the Small Farm’. Between the key note speakers, there will be a series of break-out sessions including the following topics: High Tunnel Do’s and Don’ts, Healthy Soils for Livestock and Crop Producers, Grain Marketing for Small Operators, the Indiana Grown Label, Optimizing Woodlands on the Small Farm, Agri-tourism, Know Your Local Government, and Raising Small Ruminants. The summit will close out with a general session discussing ‘Funding Opportunities for the Small Farm’. Participants are encouraged to attend both days, but one-day registrations will also be available. There will be a catered meal provided at Cornucopia Farm LLC on Friday evening, then a light breakfast Saturday morning, lunch Saturday and snacks between sessions, with as many of the food items as possible sourced from locally produced sources. This event is being planned locally and is a joint effort of local USDA Agencies, Purdue Extension, the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. and Farm Credit Mid-America. The organizers of the event have worked hard to put together an agenda with pertinent topics for varied interests across the region with experienced, knowledgeable speakers. The group is very excited to offer the Mid-Southern Small Farm Ag Summit to small farm owners and operators in southern Indiana. Interested parties are asked to RSVP by contacting the Washington County SWCD at 812-883-3006, extension 3 by April 8, 2019. There is a $20 registration fee for one day or $30 to attend both days of the summit. Event organizers reserve the right to cancel the program at any time or if the minimum number of participants is not reached.
