For the nineteenth straight year, the Madison Rotary Club has distributed personalized books to
all area kindergarten students. “I Like Me” books are personalized with each student’s name, their
friends names, and their teacher’s name throughout the text. The book in general reflects the interaction of the students, their friends and teachers during their school year and emphasizes the student’s self worth and growth.

This year, the club purchased almost 400 books to distribute to 10 schools and 21 classrooms
throughout Jefferson County. Most of the club’s nearly fifty members visited at least one of the schools
in order to read a small part of the book to each child. One of the coolest interactions the club had was
bringing books to Miss Cain’s Kindergarten Class at EO Muncie. She received a book when she was in
Kindergarten and is now teaching in the classroom across the hall from her former Kindergarten teacher
(photo below).

“We love reaching out to the kids because they are the future of our community. These books
will hopefully help them to learn and grow and teach them about their worth and potential.” said Mike
Schafer, current Madison Rotary Club President.

Books were purchased this year through the generous financial support of Rotary Club members
and their companies: Margaret Seifert - Seifert-Short Museum, Matt Forrester - German American Bank, Don Phillips - Hilliard Lyons, Greg Goodknight - Gardner Insurance, Bill McCubbin - McCubbin Motors, Dave Steele - Edward Jones, and Andrea McDole – Ivy Tech Community College.

Greg Goodknight, Rotary member and organizer of this event for the club said, “There is no
better feeling than to see a child smile when they hear their name and receive their book. Although we
are giving the gift I always feel as if I am receiving one each time I am in a class.”
