A guide to Madison's public services:

  • Police Department: 812-265-3347 | (For Emergencies, dial 911)
    The Police Department is staffed by more than 25 officers. The department provides protection and emergency response to Madison, Indiana; it also coordinates drug prevention and neighborhood watch programs.

 

  • Fire Department: 812-265-8350 | (For Emergencies, dial 911)
    The Madison Fire Chief oversees all six volunteer fire companies within the City of Madison, Indiana.

 

  • Building Inspector/Planning/Zoning Office: 812-265-8324
    This office issues building permits, performs building inspections, enforces land use ordinances, and enforces zoning regulations and nuisance ordinances. All contractors doing work within the City of Madison need to be registered here.

 

  • Historic Preservation: 812-265-8324
    The office of Historic Preservation is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting Madison, Indiana's rich cultural and architectural heritage. The office is the first contact point for individuals who live or own property within the downtown Local Ordinance Historic District. All exterior changes (windows, doors, etc.) to buildings in the downtown area must come before the Historic Board of Review for approval.

 

  • Street Department: 812-265-8304
    The Street Department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of streets and sidewalks as well as the pickup of recycling, garbage, and compost. The Street Department keeps city roads clear of snow and ice during the winter months.

 

The Parks Department Board meets on the first Monday of each month at 5 pm. The Parks Board assists with the daily business of the facility, which ranges from managing fees, completing special projects, budgeting expenses, and planning for upcoming events such as softball leagues.

 

  • Water/Sewer Department: 812-265-8312
    The Madison, Indiana Water Department provides water and sewage service to residents. For customers activating or deactivating a water account, there is a one business day waiting period. For residents renting and needing water turned on, there will be a $150 deposit that must be paid in person. Regular payments can be made in person at City Hall, online, or through automatic ACH transfer from your personal account.
