All roads lead home Madison is located on the Ohio River in southeastern Indiana. It is conveniently situated among three metro areas -- approximately 59 miles northeast of Louisville, Ky., 91 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 91 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Covering 361 square miles, with elevations ranging from 450 to 800 feet, Jefferson County is rural in nature, yet the city of Madison and town of Hanover provide commercial and industrial opportunity. The Ohio River is the reason Madison was settled, and it continues to provide a low-cost water highway for thousands of tons of barge cargo each year. Fifteen barge lines operate from the port of Madison. 21st Century businesses, however, require other forms of transportation, and Jefferson County is well situated to provide them. The county is traversed by U.S. 421, which includes the Milton-Madison bridge to Kentucky. Indiana highways 7, 56 and 62 also cross the county. For interstate highway travel, I-65 is 22 miles away, I-71 is 20 miles away and I-74 is 48 miles away. The 25-mile Madison Shortline Railroad connects with CSX at North Vernon. Shipping and car storage can be arranged through the Madison Port Authority, which operates the railroad from its office at Jefferson Proving Ground. Madison Municipal Airport features a 4,400-foot runway and is operated by the Board of Aviation Commissioners. A modern terminal, dedicated in 2001, helps handle 15,000 landings and departures annually. Louisville International Airport and the Greater Cincinnati International Airport are little more than an hour's drive away. Lee Bottom Flying Field, south of Hanover, is an airfield with a grass landing strip that caters to vintage aircraft.
